Sgt. Mike Powell of the West Valley Police issued a brief statement that said the department had received "information in regard to the ongoing investigation," The Salt Lake City Tribune reported.
Susan Powell, 28, who is not related to the sergeant, disappeared in December 2009. Her husband, Joshua, who has been identified as a person of interest in the case, said he returned from an overnight camping trip with their two sons, then 2 and 4, and found his wife gone.
Chuck Cox, Susan Powell's father, told the newspaper police did not tell him about the possible lead. He said he learned of it from friends, called detectives and was given no details.
The Tribune also reported that Joshua Powell, who now lives in Puyallup, Wash., with his sons, has obtained a temporary restraining order against his father-in-law. A hearing is scheduled Tuesday in Tacoma.
"I'm kind of relieved, actually, because now, next week, we're scheduled to go before a judge and address his accusations," Cox said. "He will have to provide some evidence to a judge and he has none. It's a good chance to confront these charges."
